Intellectually, as state of being would be defined as a way of thinking and functioning in the world with a set of definable characteristics that can be used to distinguish one state of being from another. This understanding of a state of being makes us think that a state of being lies inside us. For example, thinking is a state of being characterized by thinking. Laughing can be a state of being. Play is a state of being such that in which we are engaged is not seen as important to our mind.

Although this understanding of a state of being is sufficient form most uses of the phrase "state of being," from the creativity perspective, the a state of being is something a little different. As a result of how  our inner world is reflected in the outer, whatever state we are in is also being expressed as our environment, what our bodies are doing in that environment and the experience we are having in our bodies in that environment. Within this understanding, what needs to be understood is that what we actually experience physically and the environment in which we find ourselves is reflective of, and part of, our state of being. Another way of stating this is that the state of being we are experiencing is all of what is occurring both internally and externally. If any one thing changes spiritually, mentally, emotionally and/or physically we are not in the same state of being. Similarly if something changes in our external world, we are no longer in the same state of being. To be is to be in the moment fully present to what is. Each moment is a different state of being.

Alternatively said, our state of being is about how we have focused our attention and awareness and whether or not we are present to what is as it is to freely dissipate the energy in the experience we have or we are overlaying what we think and believe. In this regard, we change our state of being simply by how we shift the focus of our attention and awareness but nevertheless, the focus of our attention and awareness is being determined by our external world. That is, in a different environment for the same focus of our attention and awareness we will be in a different state of being. It is here we being to see the power of the illusion of mind to mask what is, as it is and to only see and experience what it chooses to experience. In this regard, the phrase "state of being" is synonymous with how and where we have focused our attention and awareness.

This is an extremely important point to understand relative to our creativity and our creative endeavors. How we understand it will determine how we go about creating the experiences that we choose to have. We cannot copy our previous actions of the body and/or the mind that we previously experienced and expect to experience the same state of being that we were in that created those experiences. We are different because of the experience. To try and recreate it is to live in the past rather than creating something new.

To be, just be, is to be an state of being appropriate for the situation at hand true to who and what we are without a conscious effort to be in that way of thinking and functioning. That is, we do it without the involvement of mind thinking to do it. To be is to be fully surrendered to the flow of energy without mind shifting or channeling that flow in any way.

If we are consciously aware of creating the way of thinking and being, then we are acting and not being. Rather we are in a state of acting or in the state of being an actor. We are not being. That is, we are not being natural to our preferred way of being in the situation such that conscious action by the mind is not required. When we are being, we are not aware of what it is that we do. If our awareness is focused on the doing we are not being but being in the state of being of doing something. To be is to be out of thinking and judging mind relative to what we are being. 

Obviously we choose a different state of being, or to move into a different state of being through mind. But once we choose to be, we are not aware of being, we just be. We are capable of switching between states of being completely nonconsciously. Now an important understanding can be had at this point. We normally switch into a state of being based on what state of being allows us to most effectively to experience and dissipates the energy that is present in a given situation unless a habit of the past or a past response pattern takes over. This is why it is important that unless we becomes aware of our habits, we can quickly fall into ways of being that do not serve us and do not serve creative needs. Rather we continually repeat the past in a new way. When the energy is totally free to dissipate, we are in the moment true to the moment. We are just being. When we interject the past, we are no longer being present to what is. 

For example, even though many of us grow up and leave home, no matter what our age, we will shift to a state of being a subservient child whenever we are in the presence of one of our parents. If we donít switch to be subservient when our parent moves into their parenting role, we will have some type or form of confrontation or we will being to deny ourselves in some way. Similarly if we shift into a teaching role when another person is unwilling to be in a student role, we have essence of conflict. This is especially true if the other person see us much other than a teacher. It is best when both perceive the situation in the same way.

When we focus the attention and awareness of our mind on the task at hand and doing the task such that we create a state of being without any thinking, judgment or analysis of the task itself, we access the most creative power for that state of being. We become open to creative inspiration. However, if we are thinking and analyzing our way through the task, inspiration cannot get through. Obviously some states of being are more creative than others. The more limits and barriers on the task performed by our mind in the state of being determines how creative a state it will be. Being a child and washing the dishes at the command of a parent is not as creative a being a child free to play in washing the dishes where we are free to choose what we will do in play as we wash the dishes with no roles or barriers as to how we can play.

The impact of a state of being is that it is what can be described as contagious. Our state of being infects others to become like us whether we realize it or not. The reason for this is quite simple. Our energy goes where we focus our attention and awareness. If someone chooses to be with we and focus on us, our state of being will cause them to move themselves towards becoming like us. Or rather, better said, causes them to move into a state of being that is reflective of the type and kind in which we are in. How fast and how much they become like us depends on how much the truly focused on watching and observing what it is that we do an how we do it.

This is the whole basis of the guru-disciple relationship and/or a master-apprentice relationship. In the guru-disciple relationship, the disciple uses the guru as the focus of their meditation and their life. In many ways their life become a meditation on the guru. What they are doing is becoming the guru. Whether they realize it or not, they watch, they observe and in essence copy what they see.

This is also the principle behind the traditional master-apprentice relations where the apprentice learns a trade or skill from copying a master. In the apprentice relationship, the apprentice focus on what the teacher or master does and the way they do it. The apprentice watches and observes exactly what the master does, when they do it. They may not fully understand why, but the know what to do when faced with certain situations.

Simply said, this is a process of mimicking. It is the identical process that we as a child used subconsciously early in life use to learn to copy and become like our care givers to be able to respond and live in the world in which they are born. Then as the child become aware of their choices, they develop their own identity but nevertheless, become of how mind works much of what we do only mimics what we learned from our care givers and we never really fully analyze and are aware what we have copied. In this process, the care givers literally and figuratively bind our creative life energy into given patterns simply by being who they are and we copies many of the care givers patterns. Those patterns that we copy that are not appropriated to expression of the our true self binds the our creative life energy and ultimately reduces our creative ability and creative power.

The impact of a state of being can be viewed much like a flat stretched piece of elastic fabric such that if you push down in one spot, you create sort of a little well as long a you push down on that spot or put a little weight on that spot. This well then causes others to fall into it and experience it without necessarily the individual being aware of what is happening. There is the understanding that we cannot give what we do not have. Similarly, we give what we have. The state of being in which we live pulls others into that state. If we wish to change the world we experience, we have to change our state of being for we are only calling others to experience that state of being we are creating for ourselves.
