Thinking as an addiction is discussed in the topics, "Our creativity and the issue of addictions," "Addictions and mind’s way of avoiding the anxiety of the unknown" and "Thinking as an addiction in the creative process." One question which can be asked is, "What is the origins of thinking as an addiction?" Or, may be better said, "What is it about Physical Creation such that thinking can become an addiction and keeps form experiencing the depth and breadth of our creative power?"

As defined, an addiction is the state of being addicted. To be addicted is to be given over to a pursuit, practice or habit. That is, the practice or habit has control over us as opposed to us controlling the habits. From a creativity perspective, thinking becomes an addiction when it does not allow us to be present in the moment at that point of creative power. Relative to the reason why we are not present to, or distracted from, the moment is a result of one or more of several phenomenon. Each of them are discussed separately in a hyperlinked discussion topic. They are:

The nature of our being
Essence of the creation process
The anxiety of the unknown
The nature and issues of mind in creativity
Loss of freedom to explore
Fear and the unknown

What is interesting is each of these create a different type and kind of addictive thinking response. By observing the type of response we have we can identify which phenomena is driving our thinking addiction. In any case, we may find we need to address each of these phenomena if we are going to step out of the addiction of mind related to our creativity.

The recommendation is to become mindful and aware of what we believe and how we think and respond to life based on those beliefs. Then look to see if how and what we think and respond to life is robbing us of our creative power. We can get some idea as to what phenomena is pushing us to a thinking addiction by the kind of thoughts we have. For example, if our thoughts center on seeking comfort, contentment and the like, then probably the nature of our being is dominating and providing the greatest influence on our response. Similarly, the essence of the creative process gives rise to desiring to hold onto things and/or unwilling to let go of things needing to leave our life. The anxiety of the unknown gives rise to a discomfort and feeling about life and we are lead to numb, suppress or divert our attention from what we feel. The nature of mind and issue of mind in creativity gives rise to the desire for "the good old days" and wanting to live in the past and unwilling to move into the future.

Often these patterns are very subtle. They are rarely recognized of robbing ourselves us of creative power. Loss of freedom to explore usually centers on our desire to move away from anything painful especially the types and kinds of situation where our creativity was previously thwarted. Then, finally, there is fear and the unknown. He we fear whatever we face for whatever reason we have. If we give ourselves over to the fear rather than facing the true hazards of the situation, we are laying the foundation for an addictive pattern. Then when we fear something we become paralyzed or run away.
