Emptying oneself: We need to journey into the underworld and the unknown to find our true identity. [This is the traditional hero’s/heroin’s journey to find the treasure - the gift we incarnated to bring into the world.] The question is for all of us, "How deep are we willing to we go?" Total or partial emptying of oneself is a simultaneous spiraling "down" while paradoxically spiraling "up." To explore the depth and breath of our pain [and pleasure] without the mask – this means taking ourselves apart piece by piece.

NOTE: “Dying Before We Die” and “Emptying ourselves” more often than not, normally go together. They are separated here for discussion purposes. What needs to be understood that we can die to something but never empty ourselves of what causes the death. Continued embarrassment in a way we act in the world could be such an example. We suffer a death of ego each time we are embarrassed but we never change the actions that cause the embarrassment. Similarly, we can empty ourselves but not die. For example, someone gets divorced and empties themselves of their spouse but then never die to within which causes the issue with their spouse such that they continually repeat the actions with another.

Background

What is emptying oneself? Emptying oneself can be see as viewing life through a filter. There is a way to view life that allows for our truth to freely unfold in the world. Then there are ways to view life that do not allow the truth of who we are to be seen and brought into the world.. Being a unique creation, we have something very unique to offer the world and Creation. However, most of us use a view or perspective of life that, in one or more ways, confines who and what we are and does not let our truth unfold. We need to either clean and wash the inside and outside of the filter to see clearly or we may have to replace the filter with a completely new filter.

The work we need to do to replace the filter is much like cleaning and washing the inside and outside of the filter but involves much deeper and profound changes. If you wish, you can look at washing the inner and outer of the lens/filter as a shallow dying before we die and replace the lens/filter as a deep dying before we die. Exactly what any one individual will need to do is unique to them and it is essential that one learns to follow their internal compass before the start such work.

We each are an infinitely creative being. When something truly serves us in life, we can feel and expansion within our being to one degree or another, into the infinity of our own being. It is a feeling that can be never ending for we are infinite. Sometimes it is subtle sometimes it is quite huge and overpowering. Some have described it as if we were a balloon being blown up with air. As air is continually added to the balloon there the fear will “pop” but yet we just continually expand bigger than we thought possible. The feeling of expansion can be experienced as we feel full of life and feel life is worth living. There is an excitement about life and living. There is an in inner satisfaction that is not dependent on the external world.

When we feel we are contracting, becoming less that who we are, life is not worth living and the like, we are being faced with experiences that are not serving us. On this point, feeling of fear, being terrified, discomfort, dissatisfaction, pain, and the like are do not necessarily imply we are not being served. More often than not we are terrified when we face the infinity of our own being and it can appear as that we are falling into an endless abyss. But within these “negative feelings” is an underlying thread of expansion and the inner knowing we are being served because we are only moving past the perceived view of mind and mind is desperate not face what it perceives will destroy it.

Before we undertake the journey of emptying ourselves we need to know what it feels like to be served and what it feels like to deny our truth. We need to know how to discern our personal truth. We need to calibrate our internal compass before moving forward.

The origins and essence of the filter we use arise from the fact we all contain life experience which determine how and what we think and believe about life. Additionally we have been given understanding, opinions and ideas about life and the nature of Creation which may or may not be true and/or accurate and/or may or may not serve our uniqueness. The question is whether or not the life and experiences we have and what we have come to think and believe allows us to live true to who and what we are. Emptying oneself is to remove all that does not serve. Removing that which does not serve can be seen to occur at two levels - a shallow level and a deep level

There are two analogies that can be used to view this emptying process. One is the food we eat and the other is washing a filter. We all eat food which we digest and the body takes what it needs from the food and discards the remainder. The shallow level is analogous to changing the food we eat to change the type and kind of nutrients available to the body. Here we essentially kept what is in our life but “feed” on it differently. The deep level is to go inside and change what is extracted from the food such that whatever we eat is digested differently. Similarly, when a filter or piece of glass is dirty, there are two sides to wash. Look a the lense of a telescope. Washing the exterior of the lens or filter, that which is exposed to the world, is usually relatively easy. Washing the interior of the filter or lens means we must find a way to go inside and clean the lens or the filter.

Emptying at the shallow level will cause a death to things to which we are attached in the external world. It is the classic approach of changing jobs, joining a new club, emptying a room and buying new furniture and the like. The changes can work, but they often only mask what really gives rise to what we experience.

Emptying oneself at the deeper level is a journey into the underworld and into the unknown of the forgotten life experiences. At the deeper level it is a journey into the nonconscious world into our subconscious (past experiences of our current life) and unconscious (past experiences before this life). In this journey is not so much that what we face is unknown but rather it is something we have forgotten. In this regard, we know the full extent of the hazards we face and we do know what we fear about the hazards. It is just that we have forgotten and it appears unknown. Changes made at the deeper level cause permanent changes in our life both internally and externally. Changes made at the deeper level allow that gifts we carry to be revealed.

We each are a unique aspect of Creation and the Consciousness which lies in Creation. We each have something to offer Creation that no one else can give. However it is only when we live our truth is that gift, or those gifts, revealed. It making the journey inward, to explore our inner forgotten worlds, we take the classic mythical hero/heroine journey.

The journey we take is simultaneously a downward and upward journey. As we move down into the depth of our being, we also experience an expansion of our being and understanding who and what we are. Traditionally, it would be said one become more spiritually orientated as they dig deeper. What happens as we dig deeper, we remove the bars of the cage of our own making that keeps our creative ability and creative power confined. As we explore the depth and breadth of our true creative ability and creative power, we find that there are aspects of our being that transcend time and space. We can enter realms of Creation we never knew existed and have what has been traditionally described as a variety of types and kinds of mystical and/or shamanic experience. In essence we being to explore the infinity of our own being and that of Creation simultaneously.

To truly empty ourselves internally or externally relative to some aspect of our life, we will cause a death. If you wish, look at emptying as removing all the internal support structures for house or building. In doing so, the building will collapse. However it is possible to hold the structure up and if we do so, the empty space will simply refill. To create the space for our truth to come out, we must allow the structure created by what we remove to collapse. Similarly, if we cause ourselves to die to an aspect of our being, but do not empty ourselves, the external structure will simply return and we are back to where we started.

There are two ways to empty oneself One is a fill and drain. The other is to drain and fill.

Look at completely replacing a heated vessel half full of a yellow colored water with a blue water but never draining the tank below a certain minimum level or otherwise the heaters for the water will be exposed damaging the tank. To fill and drain is to go through an iterative process where we add the blue water and then remove the mixed liquid only to add more blue water repeating the process till all the water is blue. Draining the tank this way keep a well established safety margin but the process is slow.

To drain and fill is to drain the tank as low as possible and then add the blue water, similarly iterating the process, draining and filling. In the end, we can replace the yellow water with blue water but the fill and drain is much slower than drain and fill. However in draining and filling you risk emptying the tank below the designated level.

The most radical application of these principles relative transformation comes from ancient Egypt. The idea was to teach individuals about the immortality of which lies within each of us. One method is obviously to teach people about immortality and give them very safe experiences. In time, they may come to understand such a concept. The other way was to put the individual into a sarcophagus, close the lid and keep it close till they almost suffocated creating near death experience. Then open the lid just before the individual died. Sometimes it works, sometimes it didn’t. So too our own emptying process. We can do it at a very slow level or push to the edge where we almost become crazy or crazy in what we do. For example it is reported Guirgief did something similar in crashing a car to sustain extreme body injuries to work at transcending the issue of pain and the body.

Recommendations for emptying oneself

Mining the nonconscious mind: Find something to which you are attached and deeply cherish. Remove it from your life. It may be appropriate to remove it permanently . Become aware of what you feel and why. Become aware of the memories that surface and the longing for which the object of focus fulfilled. Pull the string on why you have the feeling, memories and responses that you do. In the awareness of how and what you think and believe, you now have the options of recasting the past experiences you have had in a way that better serve who and what you are finding yourself to be and what you desire to create.

Washing the filter/lens: A truly creative endeavor is a journey into the unknown. We do not know what we are to face. To prepare ourselves, create a ritual, ceremony and/or metatheater where we symbolically wash the inner and outer sides of the lens/filter we are using to view life. The more emotionally intense the experience, the deeper we will open ourselves to accessing what needs to be changed.

The top and bottom of the box: The experiences of our life have caused us to place our creative spirit in a cage of our own making. It is constructed by the beliefs we hold and how and what we think and believe. The shallow aspect of emptying ourselves is to move laterally in life - change jobs, change partners, change our circle of friends, change where we live and the like. These kinds of moves punch out the sides of the box. However there is the topic and the bottom of the body.

The top of the box is how we have plugged ourselves into the unseen aspects of Creation by how and what we think about God, the Creative Powers of Creation, and the like. The bottom of the box is how we plug ourselves into physical Creation. It is about control, ownership, the focus of our attention and awareness to ground our creative life energy, sexuality and the longing for the beloved/Beloved and the like. Give yourself permission to explore and punch out of the top and bottom of the box. Look to what really allows you to feel connected with the unseen realms of Creation and look to see what allows you to feel full of life, a passion for life, a desire to create life sexually and non sexually, and a desire to be in physical Creation.

The top and bottom of the box ritual: If exploring the top and bottom of the box described above is to difficult or too much to face, look at doing a ritual to get the memory imprint that you have “crossed the line” and are looking to get the energy flowing to face the top and bottom of the box. Put yourself into a box, cage or the like and escape from the box. One ritual an individual did was they were placed in a locked room and the only way out was to unlock a locked window and use the fire escape to exit. Another was tied up in break away chains. Become aware of what you feel and why. Become aware of the memories that surface and the longing for which the object of focus fulfilled.. Pull the string on why you have the feeling, memories and responses that you do. In the awareness of how and what you think and believe, you now have the options of recasting the past experiences you have had in a way that better serve who and what you are finding yourself to be and what you desire to create.

A study program - fill and drain program: Begin some type and kind of study program that will cause you to stretch past your belief and how and what you think about yourself and your world at each and every level of your being. As you learn new concepts, look to replace existing beliefs with beliefs that will better serve the freedom of your creative spirit. Seek to create as much internal freedom as possible and allow it to filter out into the world and all that you think, say and do. In doing so, you will give yourself the gift of freedom and give the gift of freedom to the creative spirit to all with whom you have contact.
