Focusing on a body sensation exercise

Body sensations are essential to both our intuitive guidance and body wisdom. To use either of them, we need to be able to focus on our body sensations. The following general technique can be used to help focus our attention on the sensation for any experience we have and to surface the basis of the feeling. This is a general technique and It is suggested this techniques be adapted to what is most effective for our personal creative needs.

When a bodily sensation is felt, relax, clear the mind. Mentally create and hold a space for the sensation to expand and reveal itself. Ask whatever is being felt to reveal itself and its origins and what it has to communicate. Pay attention to what arises. There could be additional sensations, thoughts or images and place each concern that arises, aside continuing the process until nothing else seems to arise. Continue to ask wherever questions may be appropriate to what arises.

If there is more than one concern that appears, select the one concern that arises with the strongest feeling and bring it into focus, paying attention to the feelings and whatever else may arise around it.

Look at the quality of the feeling or sensations. If no images or thoughts have already appeared, are there any words or images that seem to describe the quality of the sensation or feeling being expressed.

If there are multiple words or images available that seem to relate to the situation, go back and forth between the feeling and the words or images and see what "resonates" or feels to be the correct association of the feeling with a word or image. Frequently there will be only one word or image, in which case the next step is unnecessary.

Ask if the word or image that came from association with the sensation is a valid observation or analysis of the original issue that the sensation represented. There should be a change in the feeling or sensation, however slight the shift may be, recognizing the validity of the association.

Go with what information comes up or surfaces in the shifting sensations or in the new sensation or feeling. Act on the information that is given as necessary.
