Probably one of the most effective ways to surface what we think and believe, fears, opinions, judgments, biases and the like is with the assistance of the adversary or petty tyrant. Christ said, "Love your enemy." For years the author thought it meant to love those people we dislike in our life and nothing more. However, when the understanding came that we need to transcend duality, the view of the enemy changed dramatically. The way to view this is very simple. Life is about experience and awakening consciousness. We are on the earth plane to have experiences and, in many ways, to experience all the range of roles and emotions that we can have. Expanding consciousness is about "been there, done that" to have had the experiential knowing and understanding so one is able to sit in compassion with someone in any situation.

To experience the entire range of emotions and learn to be compassion in all situations, suppose we need to have the experience of hating and getting so angry at someone that they could almost kill them. Now, think about this, if we don’t really like someone or care for them, are we going to risk making them so angry at us that they may kill us solely so they can have the experience they need to have? Would we risk our life to give someone such an experience if we didn’t like them. Probably not. Only someone who loves us deeply would place themselves in such a position. A position where they would risk us killing them so we could have the experience we need to have to become who we ultimately are to become. It is why Christ said, "Love your enemy." It is only someone who loves us deeply that would be willing to be our enemy. It is also why Judas Iscariot was loved by Christ. Who loved Christ more than to play his betrayer so that Christ could have the experience He needed to experience? Something to contemplate.

Our adversary or petty tyrant is one who "pushes all your buttons" and brings up all our hates, angers and fears so that we can face them, and be done with them while at the same time experiencing the range of emotions necessary to awaken our consciousness. It is one of the strangest contradictions, but the ones who we see as our greatest adversaries and the petty tyrants in our lives, are the ones that take us to some of our greatest learning. For they push us into the realms that many others would fear to enter and not take us. The depth and intensity of the feelings, either positive or negative, that one takes is often the measure of the depth and benefit of the message that is given to us.
