A note on
holding the space for another
As we being to explore the depth
and breadth of our creativity, we will find there is more to
Creation than our
mind can imagine. This is quite easily understood.
Mind, as most of us know it and experience it, arises as a result of
the experience we have in Creation. The
current mind as we know it
is not the cause of us being here. Something lies beyond mind. What
lies beyond mind will never be fully understood., communicated
and/or comprehended by mind simply because mind is the result of
experience within the Creation we are experiencing. Although we can
create an experience through mind by how and what we think and
believe and how and what we choose to experience, there is a
source/Source that lies beyond mind.
Tapping the source/Source
(Top)
We can have an experience of this
source/Source but it cannot be obtained through
mind. All that mind
knows is what it has experienced and what it perceives in any given
experience. What it perceives is not necessarily accurate for it
characterizes what it perceives based on the past. Any attempt by
mind to access this source/Source or create an experience of the
source/Source, will cause us to miss it. Mind only knows what it has
experienced. Whatever we choose to do and whatever we perceive as a
result of that choice is a creation of mind. It is not, and will
not, be an experience of the source/Source. We can create wonderful
ecstatic states but they are only a creation of our mind. All we can
really do is create the conditions to stumble on, or into, the
source/Source. That is, to have an experience of the
Ultimate Accident.
What needs to be understood and what has confused many is that
whenever we transcend the
ego we created, we access a new level or
area of creativity within our being. When we do this, there is a
corresponding flow of energy that is experienced. The deeper we go,
the greater the rush of energy. If deep enough, this rush of energy
is like puncturing the rock face that confines a high pressure
source. It is like tapping a powerful underground pressurized oil
reserve that can be used to fuel our creative endeavors or an
underground water source that gushes forth to give life and nourish
our creation. It also can be seen like an active volcano bursting
forth, spewing molten lava that both destroys your existing creation
but also recreating and expanding the creation much the way the lava
expands the existing land mass. The deeper the level we tap, the
greater the intensity and flow of energy that comes forth. All that
stands between us and tapping the
source/Source is the vessel we
constructed and use to carry us though life. If this vessel, our ego
and associated
belief structure is insufficient to carry the energy
we release, we either shatter our vessel or shut off the source of
energy. Normally we will shut off the source/Source before we allow
it to destroy our ego. Tapping one of these deeper levels is what
give rise to what has been called the
Kundalini Experience.
This flow of energy from any level deep within our being that we tap
is continuous and infinite if we allow it to continually flow. We
can’t turn back if we wish to sustain the flow we have accessed. If
we wish, we can look at this
source/Source to which we refer as the
infinite Source out of which all creation flows and it is. However,
most of us do not normally access the Source at its most deep level
to experience its infinity for a variety of reasons, Hence the use
of the word source with a small “s” representing an energy flow that
we tap into that is infinite but it is less than that which we would
feel if you actually tapped the Source in all its infinite capacity
in all aspects and at every level of our being.
Many feel they have tapped the Source, but in reality they have only
tapped a very small portion of what is available. Simply said, if we
haven’t built a container and cleared a sufficient space capable of
holding the Source in all its infinite capacity, we haven’t tapped
the total Source. We have only tapped an amount equal to the size of
the space the vessel we have constructed can hold. For most of us,
it is a very small portion of what is possible. Usually, our
vessel
is too small. Not become anyone or anything limits us. Rather, we
limit ourselves by having and inadequate perspective about ourselves
and Creation.
Stumbling into the Source
(Top)
Now, if we do stumble onto, or
into, an experience of the
source/Source, two other issues will
present themselves. One is that the source/Source is infinite as to
what it can create - all possibilities exists. But
mind only know
what it has experienced and what it thinks is possible. To attempt
to put the source/Source into mind would be like trying to
put
infinity into a box. Hence there will always be an element of
mystery or the mystical when it come to access and dealing with, or
near, the source/Source of one’s being or the
Source of Creation.
The second is that, whatever we think and/or remember about the
experience of the Source will be determined by
mind and the past
experiences we have had. Unless we have the necessary
minimum set of requisite experience, the depth and breadth of the experience we
have will not be adequately remembered and seen for what it is. We
will neither consciously know and/or understand the true nature of
this Source through mind even though we have experienced it. The
problem is further discussed in the topic, “The problem of mind and
an experience of the Source of Creation - the trap of mind.”
Several recommendations are made here as to how to open ourselves to
the depth and breadth of the Source if we stumble into the
experience. One particular thing we can do to help and ensure we
will see and adequately characterize and remember the Source for
what it really is is to allow ourselves a variety of experiences in
life. In particular, there are two types. One type is to experience
a variety of things outside of how we define ourselves.
Traditionally the experiences have been called
“not doing”
practices. That is, we do something other than what we think and
believe ourselves to be. These “not doing” experiences are
determined by
mind and are often attempts to experiences the
opposite side of the duality we hold in mind.
The second type are experiences that are determined by what we feel.
These experiences would include doing what is characterized as being
lead to doing by our
heart. There are experiences to which we are
lead by feeling and what we feel. These experience will help further
open ourselves to what we feel and open our ability to sense beyond
mind to be comfortable being
out of mind. Both of these approaches
will help us to transcend our mind as we know it and experience it
such that when, and if, we have the
Ultimate Accident, we will know
and understand what we experience.
Sustaining the source/Source
(Top)
To tap into this energy and
sustain its flow at any level of our being, we need to have a space
sufficiently large to hold the size of the flow that is accessed. In
other words, we need to have a space sufficiently large to contain
the creation that manifests as a result of the energy we have
accessed. Our world will change because we tapped this flow whether
or not we can sustain it. The larger the flow, the greater the
change and we have to allow our world to change in proportion to the
energy we release. Otherwise we will cause
pain to arise.
Many individuals become very successful in life but that success
destroys them for their
ego was insufficient to harness the energy
they release. Some individuals can be destroyed by the flow of the
energy itself and suffer
accident, illness or disease. Others
manifest the energy but it is the creation that destroys them. Each
individual is different and each will respond differently to the
energy release. There “Proverbial story of five men,” address the
types and kinds of things that can occur - one died; one went crazy;
the third became an atheist; the fourth became a
mystic and the five
was blinded in some way.
So too the possibility with every time we tape the
source/Source.
Our container or the vessel we try and put this energy into will
determine what happens to us. If we can be
out of mind
when we tap
the Source, we are then free to capture the flow into which we
tapped. We can then play in that flow if our
ego structure is large
enough to contain the flow. But we can be assured the ego structure
we start out with is too small. Our ego in which we start is sized
to fit the current flow of energy that is sustaining us when we tap
into the Source. Any significant change it that flow will shatter
our current vessel with potential consequences. Hence the need to
step out of mind when tapping the Source.
Using an established tradition to access the source/Source
(Top)
Established traditions which do
allow us to tap into the creative levels at any of a variety of
depths create an inner and outer space to contain the flow that is
accessed. That is their function. However, any established tradition
is designed to tap the energy in steps and in a very controlled
fashion in a way the tradition wants the individual to access the
source. Most traditions only allow a relatively small flow at any
one time rather than what is actually possible. More importantly,
the traditions do it their way, the way they want to do it. That is
one reason way many traditions have degrees of initiation.
The reason that is routinely given, of course, is for the
individual’s safety. However, observation and experience indicates
otherwise. The true reason is the desire of
ego to control the
energy and protect itself rather than surrendering to it.
Understand, the flow of energy from the
Source of Creation
manifesting in real time. The only thing that can be damaged by the
flow of energy from the Source is that which is constructed by
and/or and held by the ego, including the ego itself, and nothing
more. The essence of our being cannot be damaged by the Source for
it is the Source manifested no matter how huge a flow of energy is
release into our being. Our essences cannot be harmed by the Source
for our essence is one with the Source and identical to it. In
actually, if we allow it, the flow of energy from the Sources is a
cleansing agent and will wash clean the essence of our being and
remove the distorted view of reality the ego creates. Any
destruction which is perceived to occur is not caused by the source
but the ego trying to contain the Source.
Any established tradition is actually a form of
collective ego and
it desires to survive like any other
ego. The tradition survives by
how it controls its members. It is not uncommon that the individual
serves the tradition rather than the tradition serve the individual.
We need to be understood is that behind each tradition and lineage
that leads us on a path to access and release the increased energy
available from deeper levels of being there is an intention or a
desire. The intention or desire is to create a particular type or
kind of creation, or way of being in the world, on which that
tradition or lineage was founded. The intention which created the
tradition and lies imbedded in the tradition attempts to control and
limit the energy flow to meet its needs. Any established tradition
and/or lineage attempts to control and direct the flow of the energy
that is released for its own ends because that is what a tradition
or lineage does.
As time progresses, each lineage and each tradition will evolve and
unfold according to its intention on which it was founded. If we
wish to know the real intention that underlies any organization or
group of people, spiritual or non-spiritual, that attempts to tap
into and release the creativity of its members we only need to look
at the unfoldment of the life of the organization and we will see it
quite clearly.
Many masters have said, “You know a tree by its fruit.” So too with
intention within a tradition. We know the intention, spoken or
unspoken, that underlies any life whether it be an individual, a
group of individuals, or an organization, by the fruits of that life
and what it manifests in the world. What is spoken is not always
reflected in action. Words can be used for deception. Actions and
the pattern of actions is the fruit of our thinking, is the proof of
the intention. Some traditions and lineages, and organizations in
general, are like active volcanic islands constantly reforming,
growing and expanding bringing new life into the world. Other are
like continents with long dormant volcanoes and slowly reforming and
changing but really they are only being worn away and waiting for
the time when they are submerged under the sea to be recast into a
new creation.
Accessing the source/Source
without a tradition (Top)
If we try to access this
creative life energy at the deeper levels of being without a tradition, we
are free to direct that energy into the creation of our choice.
However, if we have not created a space large enough for the energy
to flow into which we tapped, we will cause the energy flow to shut
off or shatter our
ego, the vessel you constructed, simply because
we will not be able to contain, (accept or believe) what the energy
asks us to do with our life. Most will instinctively shut off the
flow before it destroys the ego.
Before attempting to tap into the energy, we need to create a
sufficient space to sustain the flow. This is why established
traditions have predetermined paths that we need to follow or become
fully indoctrinated into before we are allowed to tap into any
particular level. We need an appropriate space for the energy that
we are going to release. In one way these traditions do a great
service. However, in another way they do a great disservice because
we never really fully tap into the energy and allow it to manifest
through our own unique creativity in the way that is uniquely us and
fulfill the
truth of our being. In understanding this, the question
becomes, “How do I tap into the source at the deepest possible level
and yet have a space that allows me to be unique me?”
The problem has been that it is extremely difficult for a single
individual to both tap the source and hold a space within their
being to hold the energy as it flows. If we tap into the Source and
cannot hold a space for the energy within our being and we do not
turn off the energy, we will appear crazy to the world or very
ungrounded, creative and idealistic but have no way to bring those
ideas in form. Most probably, we will be unable to function in the
world. Simply said, we get swallowed and suffocated by the energy,
by life created within our being. If we hold the space but cannot
adequately tap into the source at the level we desire, we will
become a non believer in the whole process for we will have done all
the work but experience no flow. If we can do both, we most probably
would not be reading this material because we will be too busy
flowing in the flow we created and it would have its own purpose for
our life to which we are more than willing to surrender. If we can
do both, we don’t really need to be reading this.
To tap the source alone, we have to be totally willing to surrender
to go where the energy leads us and allow our
ego and who we think
we are and what we think about the world to become shattered and
totally destroyed. This is too difficult a journey for most
individuals. The other possibility is to allow someone we trust and
who is capable of holding a space large enough for the creativity
and energy we wish to access, yet will not burden us with a
tradition or their judgements as to what is or is not acceptable. In
this case, our efforts can then become focused on accessing the
Source. As the energy flows, the trusted person allows us the
freedom to be exactly who and what we need to be to harness the
energy in the way we choose and/or the way the energy leads us.
Then, as we become strong and fully capable of flowing with the
energy and using it as our
internal compass, the trusted person is
no longer needed. That is unless, of course, we choose to access a
new deeper level or to create something in conjunction and
partnership with the other individual.
It needs to be noted that the trusted person who hold the space for
us does not necessarily have to have made the journey themselves.
Although they are a tremendous asset is they have, they only need to
be sufficiently out of a judging and controlling
mind to allow us to
become whatever you need to become. On this point, the
Fifteen
Creative Steps/Guidelines were developed for individuals to use and
slowly create the space that one, or the other, or both, could
stumble into the Source and have the other hold the space.
Additionally, it is hoped the
Releasing Your Unlimited
Creativity material will provide enough of a framework that we can create the
space within our
ego to access the Source on our own in stages. As
we become accustomed to the feel of the expansion through a series
of successive stages and we allow our ego to stretch at each stage,
we will gain enough self confidence and strength of will to allow
ourselves to surrender to the flow and do the journey ourselves.
A
note on holding the space for another (Top)
A note needs to be made here. If
an individual attempts to hold the space for another’s creativity to
flow and they have not gone to a deeper level themselves, or they
are not willing to go as deep as the individual’s creativity is
going, they will
shatter and fragment their own vessel and probably
cause emotional
pain to the person accessing their creativity. This
is one of the more common ways we shatter the vessel of our being
without realizing it. We do not allow the creation we are
experiencing in the other person to unfold of its own nature. We
attempt to contain their energy in a vessel that is too small and
shatter ourselves in the process.
This type of situation occurs every day in life and we all have
experienced multiple examples of not allowing another person, or
Creation itself, to be true to who and what they are. The situation
described here is actually what typically occurs with most parents
and care givers of small children. The discussions about the
loss of
play in a young child is directly applicable when tapping the
Source.
When we tap the Source, we are like that small child discovering and
exploring the wonderment of Creation. It needs to be clearly
understood and emphasized that when we tap the infinity of the
Source, the only safe way of being is in spontaneous and innocent
childlike play. If we truly can”t bring ourselves to that state of
childlike play, we will face difficulties, some of which can be very
painful. A small child freely follows the energy flowing within
their being, exploring their world. The care giver, for whatever
reason, cannot allow the child to do what they are doing and force
the child to stop wherever it is they are doing whether is it is
dangerous or not. The care giver stops the action simply because
they cannot hold the space for the child to be exactly who and what
they are.
If we experiences this kind of situation, either as the care giver
or the child (which most of has have experienced) we will have to
deal with the injury caused by the experience at sometime in our
life if we are going to access our full creative potential. When a
child’s creativity is flowing out into expression and the care giver
is incapable of holding the space for the child’s creativity, they
cause the child to turn off or shutdown a part of their being.
Learning to turn oneself off rather than suffer the displeasure of
the care giver stays with the child. It becomes an obstacle in any
future attempt at accessing the creative flow. Until we face the
pain of shutting down, every time we reach that point in the flow,
we will start to turn it off.
We may say that the child’s creativity and the way they chose to
express it needs to be controlled for the child’s own development
and/or safety and that very well may be the case. Nevertheless, the
creativity of both the child and parent suffers in the process and
each will have to address what happened at a later time. The child
will need to address how and why their creativity was curtailed and
the way it was curtailed. The care giver will need to address why
they could not hold or create a space large enough for the child’s
creativity to fully manifest. The question for the care giver can
take many paths especially if their actions were based on judgement,
fears, and/or the belief that they needed to somehow control the
child’s actions. Even if there were a safety issues, the care giver
will still have to wrestle with why they didn’t create a space where
that safety issue could be eliminated to allow the child the freedom
to continue the exploration of their own being and their
own creative passion.
We may be thinking that one event will not shut off a child’s
creativity. However, we are talking about being in the innocence of
childhood and being in the flow of
our creative passion. Our
creative spirit expressing it creative passion is an
extremely
vulnerable state and it only takes one time to cause a scar, a
reservation, a question in the child’s mind as to the wisdom of
surrendering to the flow. Alternative said, it only takes one event
to remove the innocence from the situation. As we experiment with
returning to innocence and the vulnerability that exists in innocent
playfulness, we will come to see how damaging such actions can be.
The impact is much greater than most of us understand. Yet, most of
it occurs at a nonconscious level. That, in turn, makes it a little
more difficult to access when we desire to explore the depth and
breadth of our creativity.
