Aligning individual and organization performance can be done at two levels and both levels start with a common or shared intention.

A common or shared intention is an intention that each individual shares. But, sharing an intention is not mentally stating the intention. Rather it is about devoting our creative life energy to manifesting that shared intention or commonly held intention with all the passion we could have if the that intention were to fulfill our own unique desire.

This statement about the commonly held intention or shared intention is very important. We cannot say we share an intention with anyone if we do not take it as our own. Many will say they share an intention but is a mental sharing in that they are aware of it as an intention but only their mind accepts it. But they have not put any passion and energy behind the intention. Or, if they do put some energy into it, they only put a sufficient amount to allow others to think the shared intention is truly shared. If one were to pull the string on the supposedly held shared intention, they would find there is some other motive to share the intention and it not to manifest the intention. Often the desire for acceptability, the desire for a paycheck or some other reward for participating, escaping penalty or the like is what is providing the real motivation. It is our ability to mentally embracing an intention which gives rise the two ways an intention can be shared to align individual and organizational performance.

The two ways to hold and share an intention parallel the two views of creation. We can share an intention through our mind or share it with our heart. These two ways of sharing an intention give rise to the two ways to transform and organization reflected in Transforming the Organization and Transforming the Heart of the Organization.

Holding an intention with the mind is to do what mind thinks needs to be done. It is the way most organization operate. The organization creates a mission, goal or objective and then the organization does what it sees to do to manifest that mission, goal or objective. It is very easy for someone to say they agree with the mission or goal and do what they are told to create it. They may even become creative themselves to look for ways to manifest the goal or objective. But, it is not their mission or goal. They do what needs to be done simply because they get a pay check for doing it.

Holding and sharing an intention in the heart is about putting our creative life energy into that intention such that a part of ourselves seems to die if we do not pursue that goal or objective. Hold an intention from the heart is about making it key to our life and satisfaction in life.

Aligning individual and organizational goals is to either get the individual to mentally accept the organization mission and goals and for the individual to willing, if not enthusiastically, do what those mission and goals requires. When embraced mentally, the individual has little to no real interest in the outcome. They are completely satisfied to get the pay check. When embraced with the heart, they are satisfied only when the mission and goal are met. The paycheck help the individual to survive in the world but that is not the end of the loyalty to the mission or goal.

To accept the mission and goal mentally, the organization will provide training and/or some way for the individual to understand what needs to be done. The organization attempts to change the belief structure sufficiently to allow the individual’s mind to access their creative passion. Here incentives are used or the threat or fear of punishment and/or penalty.

To accept the mission and goal with the heart, the organization will seek to find a way to have the individual’s passion for and about life align with the mission and goals. In these cases what the organization does help the individual to meet deep internal needs that go well beyond the paycheck. In essence the organization seeks to align the passion of the creative spirit with the organizational mission or component mission within the organization. Here the organization may be face with changing the culture of individuals to create a more homogenous group to include the individual’s code of ethics and/or conduct as to what is or is not expected. The assumption that we all run on the same fundamental principles that many make is not embraced. Rather, the organization seeks to create a common set of fundamental principles to include addressing codes of conduct, code of honor, some type and kind of commitment statement or oath, and the like as necessary.

Exactly what will need to be done will depend on the individuals and what the organization desire to create. Most of the current available techniques can be used to mentally align the individual with the organizational. However, to align the creative passion with the organization, there is the needed to understand what type and kind of individual is needed and the hire the right type of individual to start. Here the right type of individual is one whose personal intentions, and preferably the intention for our life, aligns with what the organization desires to create. Here in also lies a difference in the approach. To mentally align the individual intention with the organization the organization will need to train and indoctrinate the individual as to what is expected and as long as the individual is trainable and acceptable they will function well. To align the passion of the individual, personnel need to be hand elected realized one size does not fit all. They will need to look for a special type and kind of individual. Including being trainable, there is the need for the individual to feel passion at the mission and goals of the organization.
